This book reproduces Chagall's original 43 gouaches for illustrating the fables by Jean La Fontaine. Although there were 100 fables and gouaches by Chagall, 57 were lost or destroyed in the years after their creation in 1926 - 1927. The exhibition was held in the Musee d'Art Moderne de Ceret and the Musee National Message Biblique Marc Chagall in Nice in 1995. This is a translation of the first edition of the book published by Yidischer Folksfarlag in Kiev/Petersburg Russia in 1918/1919. The story deals with Yingl Tsingl, a very small person like Tom thomb who is pluckly and daring (Khvat). Chafing from the endless, rainy fall weather, he manages to bring a welcome winter to the Shtetl.
